Virginia is home to some of the finest golf courses in the country. Within a short drive of Lake Anna is a nice selection of golfing opportunities that will not disappoint. Described below are some of the more popular area courses with their rates for the 2005 summer season.
Lake Anna residents spend most of their time pursuing their passion at Meadows Farm Golf Course or Tanyard Country Club (open to the public) in Louisa. Tanyard is less than fifteen minutes from the lake and Meadows just a short drive in the country away.
Meadows Farms Golf Course opened in Spring of 1993. Meadows Farms original 19 hole layout (the first hole is a warm-up hole) includes the longest hole in the U.S., an 841 yard par 6, island greens, bounce bunkers, church pew bunkers, and much more. The course was designed to get away from the conservative, stamped out layouts and is wild and crazy, while still fair and playable. The new nine holes which opened in Spring of 1996 follows the same guidelines. It includes a waterfall hole that is 60 feet wide and 45 feet tall that you actually drive your cart under. It also has a baseball hole, an Arizona hole and many unique features to ensure a different experience at every hole. Meadows Farms is located on Rt. 601, l4 miles from I95 off of Rt. 3 in Locust Grove, VA 14 miles west of Fredericksburg.
Tanyard County Club, formerly Louisa Country Club, was totally redesigned in 1998. Public play is welcome. Originally designed and developed by Larry Kavanagh, this Ault, Clark & Associates renovation places an emphasis on shot-making. The layout is varied and is a surprisingly challenging test of golf. The front nine will test you with water coming into play on three holes plus one of the nicest par three holes anywhere. Number eight is totally redesigned from tee to green in typical Tom Clark fashion. Heavily bunkered and playing 203 yards from the championship tees, this hole may very well be the signature hole of Tanyard for years to come. Wooded fairways will create a nice transition into the back nine. Length off of the tee is not the main issue at Tanyard. Every club in the bag will be needed and bring your best short game with you. This par 72, 6502 yard course can be found in the heart of the town of Louisa. Proper attire is required. Public play is welcome and only minutes from Lake Anna.
Somerset Golf Club is
a challenging 18 hole course set along the banks of the Rapidan River.
It has the feel of a Scottish links course with spectacular views of
the Virginia countryside and a very dramatic finishing hole. It features
a cozy tavern and bar, open daily serving breakfast and lunch. The golf
course re-opened in late August 2003 after an extensive renovation.
Respected Golf Course Architect, Rick Robbins, has made Somerset even
better with improved playability, look and conditioning. Come see the
exciting changes for yourself this summer. Somerset is conveniently
located on Route 3 West between Fredericksburg and Culpeper, Va. From
I-95 take Exit 130-B and follow 3 West for 16 miles to Hwy 708. From
Route 29 take 3 East for 13 miles to Hwy 708.
Augustine is a “spare no expense” golfing experience. They offer a very high quality golf course that will test even the best golfers. It can be very unforgiving to the high handicappers but is certainly in the upper scale of courses opening these days. It opened in 1995 and is designed by Rick Jacobson, who worked with Jack Nicklaus for several years. They spare no expense in making sure every detail of the course is perfect. They do not press to get large numbers on their course which is evident in their rates. They have a very strong layout and keep their course immaculate at all times. Augustine puts its best with two slogans they have: “Augustine isn’t upscale, it’s off the scale” and “Augustine has two great characteristics, difficulty and awesome beauty.”
The Gauntlet is the other course that opened up in 1995. Architect P.B. Dye in his usual fashion has forced the golfers to think as well as perform. There are problems for those of us who cannot place their shot where they intend to place it. John Daly would not score well here. A collection of design features require the golfer to play with precision, accuracy and finesse. Blind shots are required several times off the tee and on approaches to greens on many of the holes and there are plenty of dog legs. The Gauntlet is located in Curtis Park which is a regional park five miles off of I95 on Rt. 612.in Stafford County.
Shenendoah Crossings is a premium test of golf with the key word ACCURACY. Carved among mature hardwoods, this is a beautiful place to play golf. Measuring only 6200 yards from the back tees, you must hit it in the fairway. The “rough” here is measuring the inches of leaf litter, not the height of the grass.
